Chorus plans to retire the copper network by 2030
Overview
The Chorus copper network is end of life technology that is prone to faults and is not sustainable or suitable to meet the growing connectivity needs of Kiwi consumers.
With fibre now available to 87% of the country and satellite and wireless offering significantly better alternatives in rural areas, Chorus is moving towards being an all-fibre business by 2030.
This means that we are actively retiring our copper network services with all urban areas where fibre is available expected to be completed in the next couple of years and all copper services retired by the end of this decade, including areas where fibre is not currently available.

We already have several programmes of work addressing migration activities:
- Copper Withdrawal in specified fibre areas (SFA’s)
- CMAR and Country Set Retirement
- Reactive Copper
What's next
We are now looking at all other copper services. We propose to focus on groups of connections by product, eg HSNS, and in areas where there are already good alternatives and therefore cabinets are serving very few remaining copper connections.
