We are ceasing the sale of copper services in additional locations
We are ceasing the sale of copper services in additional locations. With a newly built and future-proofed fibre broadband network soon to be available to 87% percent of Kiwis, New Zealand is now less dependent on the copper network for its broadband and phone needs. Chorus is able to withdraw copper in areas where fibre is available.
What’s happening?
Our approach is generally cabinet by cabinet or where withdrawal makes sense - working with impacted Service Providers and their customers to transition their services off copper.
Not every RSP will have customers in these batches, as volumes are targeted and based on specific network areas. Chorus has shared lists of impacted customers and network areas with RSPs ahead of this tenth batch. If you have not been contacted at this time you do not have services in this batch.
We will continue to maintain and invest in the copper network where it’s needed. In areas where fibre isn’t yet built, or isn’t scheduled for build, our copper network will continue to offer consistent, reliable phone and broadband services.
The details
This Stop Sell notice of Copper Services covers the following 146 cabinets, 1 exchange and including some reactive cable ranges. These areas/cable ranges are in addition to those previously notified – full list available here under resources.
Accordingly, from 14 September 2022 we will no longer accept requests for any new Copper connections on these cabinets/cable ranges. Fibre is already available at all addresses that are supplied by these cabinets/cable ranges, and we highly recommend presenting this as a great option for any new customers.
If you place orders for new copper services off impacted network, you will receive a response in Wireline stating that ‘Copper Withdrawal is Underway for this address”. New Copper services will not be allowed.
It may be prudent to consider changes to your order journey for these locations.
