Copper withdrawal programme update

Our activity to withdraw our copper network in specified fibre areas continues and we are confirming our planned volumes for the next financial year.

Our trial with LFC Enable is nearing its closure with end of notice period and outcome notices being delivered to end users. We are working through a Post Implementation Review for this trial to ensure we understand any process issues. A wider view of the trial process and outcomes is needed to confirm we have most, if not all, issues covered.

Therefore, we are planning to run further trials with LFC’s. We are also engaging with Tuatahi and Northpower with the aim of commencing further trials in the New Year.  We will provide an update when we have confirmed timings and volumes for these new trials.

We are also following up on some services that remain on copper after batch closures. We will work with you to manage these services.

Stats so far are:

  • 750 Cabinets have been withdrawn.
  • 46,947 copper services notified
  • First LFC trial almost complete with 3 more in plan
  • 17 batches launched with 12 closed.

FY24 planned volumes

Our plan for this financial year is to include approx. 6,000 services per batch, maintaining the cadence of a batch every two months. Batches will include around 200 cabinets and 2 exchanges per batch.

We continue to include addresses where an intact ONT is in place but has not been connected.

Based on our current planning we expect our withdrawal programme would run until early 2026 with some complex scenarios to resolve.

This information will be updated on our dedicated copper withdrawal page.
