Chorus internet outages map enhancements are now live

Based on learnings from user research and major events like Cyclone Gabrielle, this update delivers clearer outage info, improved map accuracy, and a more user-friendly experience. These improvements also focus on increasing webpage resiliency and navigation accuracy.

Summary of the changes

Information visibility

  • Improved visibility and clarity of the updates and description sections, making it easier for users to view and understand expectations, live and past updates during an outage.
  • Incident numbers are now publicly displayed, allowing users to reference specific outages when seeking support from Chorus or their provider.

Spatial area accuracy

  • The areas represented on the maps are based on Stats NZ meshblocks—small, contiguous geographic units that more accurately reflect affected areas. This provides a clearer and more precise view of outage zones, helping users quickly determine if their location is impacted.

Navigation efficiency

  • We have implemented location tracking to assist users in swiftly finding their area (determined by browser location services), thereby saving time when checking for outages in their vicinity.
