Changes to UFB POI mapping

In December we let you know at the UFB Product Forum, that the mapping of some areas on the UFB Network to their POIs (point of interconnect) need to be updated. These changes are a result of improvements made to network topology, to provide shorter paths and / or add greater capacity. Some are additions made as fibre is deployed into new areas of New Zealand.

What’s happening

As the Chorus network grows and evolves to match increased traffic demand and the addition of new fibre areas it sometimes becomes necessary to remap areas to different POIs providing shorter paths or more capacity or both. We previously provided details at the December UFB Product Forum of the proposed mapping changes.

Generally, these changes and additions have no customer impact as they are for areas that have yet to be build, some do result in a change to the allocated POI for existing connections and  we need to remap end users in areas such as Mangawhai, Balcultha, Lawrence and Turangi. The full table of affected POIs is available below.

You could either leave existing customers on current handovers or migrate them to handovers in the new POI, however all new connections will map by default to new POIs unless TES is requested.

In some instances, the remapping will mean a change in tail extensions, so you may start (or stop) incurring TES charges depending on your handovers and where you map these circuits to. Once the remapping is complete any MAC orders will apply the new mapping and map circuits to new POIs unless you have specified differently for your default HOLs.

Next steps

We have already updated the mapping to the POIs with no customers connected and plan to update the rest in two weeks; so new connections will be connected via the updated mapping. There are still about 200 circuits that are mapped via the old routes. If you have customers connected via the old mapping, then your Service Delivery Manager will be in touch and will work with you to either leave these customers on current handovers or migrate them to new handovers.
