BBIP Availability footprint changes

What’s changing

We are pleased to announce that we have completed our rollout of the Baseband IP product with coverage now reaching 85% of active copper lines.  This is a significant increase from the 68% coverage targeted when we launched the Baseband IP Extended variant in May 2015.

As we have now passed more than 81% of premises with fibre in the Chorus UFB1 area and we continue to see increasing migration from copper to fibre services occurring, we believe this is the right time to reconsider Chorus’ investment in further Baseband IP expansion. We are therefore making changes to the Baseband IP Availability footprint to remove certain locations predominantly in our fibre built UFB areas where it is no longer economic for Chorus to invest in this type of new copper infrastructure.

The updated product footprint can be found in a new Baseband IP availability report that we have published.  These changes will become effective in 20 working days from now.

Key changes to the Baseband IP Availability footprint report

  • All broadband nodes are now confirmed as a Yes, No, or Planned status. We will no longer use the “Possible” status.
  • Site categories and changes to availability (where relevant):
    • ‘Yes’ for BBIP or BBIP Extended availability
      • These are sites where Baseband IP or Baseband IP Extended is available to be ordered on terms in our Baseband contract.
    • ‘Planned’ BBIP or BBIP Extended availability
      • ‘Planned’ for Baseband IP at a site means when a customer wants to order BBIP at these locations we will install the necessary equipment to deliver it.  When the site can receive orders it will move to a ‘Yes’ status in the BBIP Availability spreadsheet.
      • ‘Planned’ for Baseband IP Extended at a site means a customer can’t order the product variant at this time. We will let you know when the site becomes available to order and it will move to a ‘Yes’ status in the Baseband IP Availability spreadsheet and will be provided subject to current pricing.
    • ‘No’ for BBIP or BBIP Extended availability
      • We have removed a number of sites previously flagged as ‘possible’ for Baseband IP Extended in Chorus UFB 1 build areas where it is not economic to continue further copper investment; We have also removed sites outside of Chorus UFB areas that have had no orders placed against them at any time in the past 5 years and it is not economic to continue further copper investment.
