Chorus has announced that Dunedin is the overall winner of the year-long Gigatown competition to create awareness of the UFB programme as a critical asset for New Zealand.

Now that Dunedin has been announced as the winner we will be working towards making Gigatown “live” on 25 February 2015. 

What's the detail?

The winning Gigatown receives the following prize and will be ideally placed to become a leading digital innovation hub for New Zealand and act as an exemplar of how to bring a community together to leverage fibre broadband:

• Access to 1 Gigabit per second internet access at entry level wholesale prices for three years, along with two different funds, which will be administered by Chorus for the benefit of the winning town:
• A $200,000 Gigatown development fund provided by Chorus and Alcatel Lucent's ng Connect to support entrepreneurs and innovators taking new services to market over the gigabit fibre connection in Gigatown. For more information go to www.chorus.co.nz/gig-start-fund.
• A $500,000 Gigatown community fund provided by Chorus over a three-year period for organisations to kick start community-related developments that showcase how gigabit infrastructure and UFB can be activated for social good.

Informer 215 issued on 30 September launched the NGA Gigatown Trial providing you with the opportunity to get ready for the launch of Gigatown. This agreement allowed you to connect 10 trial customers and from tomorrow, 27 November 2014, these connections will only be available in Dunedin the winning Gigatown.
