The future of TV

Learn more about our 4K broadcasting service over fibre live trial …

In 2018, we trialled a 4K broadcasting on our network. This proof of concept trial used our fibre network to provide a direct broadcasting service to consumers’ homes. The service could run in parallel to any broadband service also provided over the fibre, using a second port on the Optical Network Terminal (ONT) installed in homes, to connect to consumers’ TVs. It was a huge effort by the team at Chorus, Nokia and other partners.

This new service could be of interest to local broadcasters who are looking for a way to provide their content to viewers without requiring an ISP partner or developing an over the top application that runs over the public internet, and therefore makes quality control more challenging.

A strength of our proposed service, thanks to the sizeable capacity in the Chorus fibre network, is that it can provide guaranteed capacity at all times. This would ensure major cultural events (such as sports) could be broadcast to all viewers, live and concurrently, in 4K or even 8K.

We have completed the trial, the technology all worked and our customers, partners, stakeholders and media were all very impressed so prepare to adjust your television.
