Copper retirement 2030

With the release of our financial results in August, we announced that we would be moving towards being an all-fibre business by 2030. This means we intend to retire all copper services by 2030, including in areas where fibre is not currently available.

As the underlying technologies that support our copper fulfilment systems become old and becoming more difficult to maintain, we are planning to retire some copper ordering and support functionality over time, and we will be communicating these during our regular updates.

This update gives you a view of next phase:

1. Copper retirement consultation: We will be engaging with all our customers early 2025 with more information on Copper retirement next steps.

2. Copper testing in Service Performance Management (SPM) Tool: We launched the Assurance Website & APIs as a replacement for SPM and other legacy portals, combining copper and fibre line testing and fault logging back in 2019. With customers having the ability since 2019 to test for copper broadband services via our Assurance Website, we will be turning off these capabilities in SPM from 7 February 2025.

Copper Broadband

  • Line State Diagnosis
  • Extended Line Testing (LQD)
  • Port Refresh

Copper Voice

  • SLT - Single Line Test

Please communicate to your operational teams that they need to use the Assurance website for these tests.

The functionality to run copper voice actions will remain in SPM. E.g: Call diversion, Call Minder.

3. Pre order tools in Wireline (Online Ordering & Tracking / OOT): With the reduction of copper services, we will be withdrawing some of our Wireline pre-order tools.

  • PSTN Number Reservation (Reserve a line number)
  • Query Intact Line (Check for intact line)
  • Open Service Order Check (Search for open service order)
  • Site and Service Check

These tools will be removed on 7 February 2025.

Copper ordering and pre-qualification will continue to be available through Wireline (OO&T)

The copper withdrawal page on the Service Provider (SP) website has been updated to now sit under a new copper network retirement page. Our roadmaps and communications regarding copper retirement will be held there.
