ONT Label workshop summary
On 12 February 2025 we held a workshop to look at the next generation of ONT labels for the 5th Gen ONT and the 2nd Gen XGS ONT. Thank you to those of you that participated. It was a great turnout with robust conversation that confirmed some of our thinking and provided a few gems that gave us some new insights.
Most notably we discussed the following:
- Unanimous agreement that the information label should be on the front of the ONT
- We discussed the port and LED labels and what names made the most sense from a support perspective.
- OPTICAL or PON were the preferred terms for the Optical light
- LOS or ALARM for the Loss Of Signal light
- GE (followed by port number) for the 1G port labels and associated lights and 10G for the 10G port label
- TEL for the ATA port and associated light
- Label format: The use of symbols vs text on ONT ports and lights. Text labels won out this one as it makes things a lot easier than trying to describe a symbol over the phone when troubleshooting.
- ONT differentiation: In the hypothetical situation that both ONTs look very similar, we discussed how a customer might differentiate between them and if it mattered. There was great conversation on this topic and much for us to digest.
- Other callouts:
- Great suggestion around a new sticker on the ITP to help identify missing ONTs
- Lots of callouts of ensuring the serial number is clear and visible
- Acknowledgement that consistency is key to help troubleshooting
Next steps in the ONT introduction journey
The next step on the ONT introduction journey is confirmation of the chosen ONTs in March, followed by RSP testing. We are aiming to have both the 5th Gen ONT and the 2nd Gen XGS ONT available for you to test at the same time to make this easier and more efficient.
