Change to VLAN Management
Chorus’ Service and Resource Inventory system has reached end of life, and the replacement Fibre Logical Network Inventory will be implemented in April 2025.
The majority of this replacement will be invisible to RSPs, however there will be two changes to how we manage and allocate VLANs compared to the current process:
- The first change is the removal of the RSP Managed VLAN scheme option. No RSPs are currently using (or have ever used) this product, so there is no impact from this change.
- The second change relates to VLAN numbers being allocated outside of a predefined range (set by the RSP). Currently, within the Chorus managed ranges, RSPs have the option to define a predetermined range from which the Chorus system allocates VLANs. However, due to a current system limitation, RSPs have been able to allocate VLAN values outside of their predetermined range, often resulting in configuration mismatches that have caused outages and disruptions for end customers.
Our new inventory system addresses this by ensuring VLANs can only be allocated within the requested range.
There are a limited number of RSPs who have end-user connections that have been allocated a VLAN outside of the range specified by the RSP. We are already working with these RSPs to understand the best option, given the upcoming changes in April 2025.
