Reminder of Handover forecasting required by 31 May 2023

Last month we informed you of our Regional Ethernet Network (REN) shutdown proposed for 30 June 2024, due to the hardware and software being end-of-life. We have also previously indicated that we intend to make changes to Points of Interconnect for UFB Fibre services.

To enable us to best meet your needs in light of this shutdown, Chorus is seeking inputs from the industry, particularly forecasts of handover capacity requirements.

What are we looking for?

As forecasting handovers isn’t something we normally ask for, early feedback highlighted it would be useful to provide some guidance on the information we are seeking:

  • We are looking for as much future direction as possible, at least until 30 June 2024 but longer is preferred
  • Indication of port capacity requirements i.e., additional ports 10G/100G geographically across the country
  • The handovers in scope of this request are all Ethernet Handovers including UFB, UBA, HSNS and BBIP

Why do we require this information?

  • These forecasts will be used to help verify our network plans and assumptions. Chorus national network planning assumptions fall within the range of global bandwidth growth assumptions of 20-30% per annum. RSP forecasts will be used to help validate that and determine how growth assumptions may differ for different parts of the market, both geographically and across different services.
  • The network planning forecasts are required since the Ethernet Handovers will in due course be sitting on the FAN network alongside the UFB handovers.

When do we require the forecasting information?

Please supply us your Handover forecasting by 31 May 2023.
