10GPON UFB trial starts now!
The 10GPON trial is available now to all of you with an Auckland Chorus Co-Innovation Laboratory (CCIL) connection.
What will drive 10GPON demand?
10 Gbps may seem incredibly, even excessively fast but past experience has shown that step changes in speed opens a lot of opportunities. Some areas that could benefit from this transformational increase in speed are:
- Kiwi homes. We expect the number of user devices to continue to increase exponentially, with each device demanding instant and immediate gratification of bandwidth.
- Businesses. The internet is no longer a luxury for businesses. Faster internet will allow businesses to be more efficient and productive, allowing them to compete in an
increasing global market. 10GPON may be particularly attractive to innovation and creative industries, especially for cloud based applications. - Schools and Education facilities. We are already seeing some larger schools struggling with 1 Gbps during busy periods. They will get major benefits from these technologies.
- Wireless backhaul, particularly with the planned rollout of 5G networks.
What does the trial involve?
The trial can be connected to any existing CCIL Access, providing you have a CCIL 10 Gbps Handover Connection.
We will provide you with one Nokia XGS-GPON ONT (XS-250WX-4), which can be connected to your existing CCIL PON splitter and will work parallel to existing CCIL ONT services. These existing connections will not be affected by the 10GPON services. The 10 Gbps GPON Proof of Concept will allow you to trial a number of new and existing services to see how they compare.
These services will be based on Bitstream 2 Accelerate Service Description. Please note that there could be multiple streams of activity occurring simultaneously as the trial will take place in a lab environment. This is a lab trial and Chorus does not provide any warranties around the performance
of the trial service and it should not be used to carry live customer traffic.
Supporting details
10GPON allow 10 Gbps bidirectional access over existing Passive Optical Network (PON) infrastructure, co-existing with existing NGA GPON services to provide a natural evolution for customers’ insatiable demand for faster and better broadband.
We have recently trialled 10GPON services in our Innovation Laboratory. This 10GPON trial was based on Nokia’s XGS-PON technology, which supports individual connections of up 10 Gbps bandwidth upstream and downstream. We have now integrated Nokia’s XGS-PON technology with our Auckland CCIL lab which is part of our UFB Integration Test Facility, providing a model NGA network that runs prototyping and testing capability directly to your premises.
